‘Pink Tax’ Problem Is Overblown, suggests GAO Report on Gender Bias in Product Pricing: Reason Roundup
This article shares its idea that the “Pink Tax” isn’t based on gender and that it is actually based on other factors such as advertising, packaging, etc. The idea I disagree with are that the “pink tax” isn’t based on gender bias. The article argues that there are other reasons that women's products tend to be higher than men's such as the afore mentioned advertising and packaging of these products. They also use the argument that some men's products are more expensive then women's, which is true, some women’s products are cheaper, but MANY women's products are more expensive than men's. I find the idea that advertising and packaging could make women’s products more expensive absurd. I still see a gender bias in this argument. If we were going with the idea that packing and advertising is the sole reason that the women's products cost more, then think about this. Why would a company package women's products in better more expensive packaging when the way the men's items gets packaged is perfectly fine? Why would companies that make women's everyday products pay so much more for advertising them then for advertising those same products for men? . If companies packaged and advertised the same, then the company can save money and so can the consumer. I understand that men's and women's products are made differently and that might change the cost to make the product, but when you have two products like men’s razors and women’s razors or men’s deodorant and women’s deodorant, that do the exact same thing, but the one with the butterflies and pink and purple costs more, that’s not okay. Plus, products geared toward men tend to work better then products geared toward women. For example, I believe strongly (and so do all of my female friends that I have talked to this about) that men’s deodorant is way better then women’s. It’s less expensive, you seem to get more, the smell is stronger, and it works way better. When I wear men’s deodorant my armpits don’t sweat as much as when I wear female deodorant. As a woman just entering into the stage of life where I have to start buying everyday essentials on my own, I start to look at prices more. It makes me so mad that the products geared for me are more expensive then the products one aisle over.
Amanda, In the future, word count is going to become an increasingly big part of grading. Try to stay close to the word count given to you. Also, I should mention that paragraphs are a thing, please use them.
ReplyDeleteThere are parts of this I could feel your anger, and those parts are great. In the parts I couldn't, it may be because there are better ways to get your points across with just a little tweak. If you read your work and something sounds wrong or weak, chances are it is.
